Mushwani Rugs are made by the Mushwani tribe, a 700 year old tribe from South Western Afghanistan. The Mushwani rugs are hand-made using needles to make the rugs. Mushwani rugs are made from lambs wool, and incorporate both Kalim and carpet giving the rug a rich texture.

The foundations of the rugs are also made of lambs’ wool. Mushwani rugs are made with natural colors so they do not run or need to be treated to maintain their color. When compared to other Afghan rugs, these rugs tend to be very light in weight.

Mushwani rugs are among the best of the Afghan rugs and as such the expected life span for a Mushwani rug is approximately 200 years.

Malakhi Rugs are hand-made using needles by the Malakhi people, unlike the Mushwani tribe there is no carpet woven into the rug.
The tribe is 700 years old and has traditionally lived a nomadic life style, until the spring of 2007, when the elders decided to establish their own village of Malakhi in the herat province, just 8 kilometers from the back gates of Camp Stone (the U.S. base where American troops are stationed).
The tribe’s livelihood is agriculturally based; the men herd sheep and goats, and raise winter wheat during the “Wet” months of the winter.

The women make the rugs, some of which take up to two years to complete. The rugs are primarily made of lambs wool. The foundation for the rug is lambs wool and the colors are natural based so they do not run or need to be treated to maintain their color, unlike rugs made with man-made dyes. These rugs are of extremely high quality, second only to Mushwani rugs in Afghanistan. The expected lifespan for a Malakhi rug is estimated to be 150 years.
